Belknap is born in Damariscotta Maine. She is the daughter of David Belknap and Louise Belknap. She attended Lincoln Academy, Newcastle Maine. She became interested in acting during her time at Middlebury College, Vermont. In the end, The American Conservatory Theater awarded her master's degrees in fine arts.
