Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a toddler. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she was already making her debut on television in an episode from 1991 of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
